Strength trainings are great as an addition to one’s regular training. They are valuable for balance improvement, bone strengthening, and the positive effect they have on our cardiovascular system. Some never bother to try it, thinking that strength training is all about lifting barbells and weights.
There is a vast diversity in weight lifting equipment, as in types of exercises also, that are designed to help you strengthen your bones, and the muscles that support them. By using certain exercise routines, you can work on strengthening each of these areas. For those of you without experience in gym workouts, this is how it goes down.
Gym Sections
Weights area, cardio area, group fitness room, and locker rooms. This is how most gyms are laid out. When you enter a gym for the first time, feel free to take a look around, or ask for a tour. The staff members will show you all the important things you need to know.
Basic Equipment
The equipment we are interested in for building strength are free weights.
Barbells can range from 1.2m to 2.4m, but also vary in diameter (25mm-51mm).
The standard training barbell is the Olympic Bar, which helps assist the Olympic lifts by having bearings that make it spin nicely. Some people refer to bars as “beater bars”, which simply means that that bar is the cheaper one that starters can use for anything.
Dumbbells. Basically every gym has dumbbells, even if they do not have barbells. Adjustable dumbbells can be used in different styles, and they can weigh from 1 to 90kg.
Trap bar, or hexagonal bar, or just hex bar. It allows the user to pick up the bar by using a neutral grip, while standing in the middle.
EZ-Curl bars (specialty bars), cambered bars, strongman logs, and safety squat bars are good for curls and different accessory movements. A gym that has specialty bars is the place where you want to be, because it’s likely they are more of a powerlifting or weightlifting gym.
